In every traditional Javanese wedding, the bride would wear ronce melati, a type of flower necklace made out of the fragrant Jasmine. The regalness of the ceremony and the bride’s elegant charms take us on a journey of Ronce Melati textile woven out of cotton native to the Tuban soil. Here, the cotton fiber is cultivated not only in the farmland but also in the backyard from house to house. The tufted technique introduces a natural irregularity in each square of the checkerboard, forming a textural feeling on the fabric that reminds one of ronce melati. A chic addition to those who adore handmade qualities, Ronce Melati textile is woven with a traditional backstrap loom or tenun gedhog——a lasting craft tradition present in many Indonesian villages. The base fabric is handwoven by backstrap loom weavers in Pak Fajar’s house, Tuban.
